Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Expanding OpportunitiesThe investment industry has well-worn, traditional paths to success. But for the industry to thrive in the future, we must attract and retain the best and brightest, who come from every walk of life, with different ways of thinking, across cultures and backgrounds. We must broaden our aperture to purposefully seek out these future colleagues. Research indicates that diverse teams deliver stronger results, and I’ve seen it in practice. FACES OF INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT
I grew up on the near north side of Chicago, in the now demolished Cabrini-Green housing project. When I graduated from high school, I wanted to go to a four-year college but couldn’t afford it, so I started working in the mail room of a brokerage firm.

I was born in Argentina, and my childhood was marked by the dictatorship. There was so much hardship and danger, one day we left—nine of us, including my grandparents—without telling anybody.

I was born in South Africa, which was going through a very tumultuous period. After a violent episode on my way to school, my mom finally said, “I don’t want to raise my kids in this environment,’’and we moved to the Netherlands.

My parents came to the United States from Mexico when they were in their mid-teens. I was one of only two Mexican kids in my class. I looked different and I had different food in my lunch. It was a culture shock.

Seeking New Opportunities
We’re always looking to uncover cutting-edge business models, so our global equity team looked for a new way to make it easy and fun to identify these opportunities by creating a space for what we call “new company discovery,” where research associates lead periodic discussions of newly discovered companies and emerging themes. Ultimately, the goal is to identify future investment opportunities for our portfolios.
One element of investing that we really embrace is looking for the next new thing—the innovators, the disruptors—the potential winners of tomorrow. And we felt we needed a separate space where we can just discover new companies.Bill Benton, CFA, Partner |

A CARING COVID RESPONSE
I was hired during the pandemic, and the way William Blair onboarded me and gave me opportunities to develop, despite the environment, made me choose this opportunity over others.
