Putting Great Talent to Good Use

What we do is defined by what we believe, and it all starts with clients. A stable foundation topped with dynamic growth helps retain talent, ensuring our best investment minds are working on clients’ behalf. Our uncompromising integrity leads us to make decisions based on what’s best for clients. And our broad-based, active ownership means we build client relationships that last for years (even decades) rather than quarters.

Client-Focused

Connecting With Clients

A lot of clients become involved in my life. They get to know my family; I get to know their family.

Considering Client Needs

We really listen to our clients when developing products, and sales meets regularly with product management to communicate what needs we see in the market. Recently, at clients’ request, we launched two new strategies to meet expected client demand and access new markets: Emerging Markets ex China Growth and U.S. Equity Sustainability.

INSTITUTIONAL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

Dynamic and Evolving

Embracing Change

I’ve worked at large financial institutions for virtually my whole career. What attracted me to William Blair is that the firm is independent and employee owned, which promotes team and individual initiative. The firm is large enough to be meaningful in the markets yet agile enough to embrace change.

SUPPORTING EVOLUTION

When I interviewed at William Blair, it was smaller then, under the radar, and felt like going into the unknown. I thought of it as an adventure. I imagined I’d try it for a few years. But I grew with the firm, and here I am 21 years later.

Julie Stevens, CFA
CLIENT SERVICES MANAGER

Several years into working at William Blair, I started going to business school and exploring next steps. Everyone at William Blair was supportive. I got to evolve within the firm.

Visionary

Beyond ESG

While many equate sustainability solely with ESG considerations in investing, within IM we consider sustainability in a broader lens— such as building sustainable engagement and deep relationships with our clients; fostering a sustainable culture underpinned by our values; generating sustainable growth in our firm; and incorporating sustainability factors and their opportunities and risks from an investment perspective.

OUR VISION

Our vision is to be the premier global investment management boutique, focused on delivering strong client results. We strive to invest and operate for a sustainable future and to create enduring value for our clients, colleagues, and communities.

OUR VISION—IN OUR COLLEAGUES’ WORDS

To me, the IM vision represents the crystallization of our thinking about how we make ourselves better in a sustainable fashion. I believe we will be better for it—better for our clients, colleagues, and communities.

Gurvir Grewal
ANALYST, THEMATIC STRATEGY TEAM

Investing and operating for a sustainable future is about creating value and staying competitive. We have to identify and adapt to the structural changes occurring around us.

Shivani Patel
SUSTAINABILITY ANALYST, U.S. GROWTH AND CORE EQUITY TEAM

I think of our vision statement as a guidepost as we continue to grow and evolve—a constant reminder that we’re not acting in a vacuum and must consider the impact of our actions on key stakeholders across our clients, colleagues, and communities.

Xiaowei Hargrove
LEAD STRATEGY ANALYST

In order to deliver on client and employee success, it’s imperative that we know who we are as a firm today and where we’re headed in the future.

Excellence, Engagement, Authenticity

I’m proud to be the 2022 recipient of the Nicholas Award. John Nicholas, our beloved colleague who passed away suddenly in 2002, inspired us to live and work by the values he embodied.

OUR PEOPLE, OUR COMMUNITIES

I volunteer to help a voiceless portion of our community—the homeless pet population. I have fostered 165-plus cats and kittens. Volunteering with animals has its challenges, but it also brings tremendous joy, and it’s the most rewarding experience of my life.

I didn’t realize just how much value we can add to wildlife conservation in urban areas until I saw us working together. A small act can make a big difference if made by a lot of people!

I mentor students who are looking for jobs. I find it really rewarding, because I remember how much I didn’t know about transitioning to being a young professional. I’m still connected with some of those students on LinkedIn, and I can see how they’ve progressed in their careers.

I lost my youngest brother, Randy, in 2016, to an unexpected heroin/fentanyl overdose. This has driven me to raise funds and awareness for substance use disorder to help those battling addiction. I partner with The PATH to Recovery Foundation.

We care about the things our colleagues care about. We support their charitable giving with a paid day off to volunteer every year and a 1:1 donation match (which sometimes is upped to 2:1 for more severe global crisis, such as the war in Ukraine or bushfires in Australia).
